Financial Inclusion and Risk Management for Agricultural Development

Victor Murinde, Robert Lensink and Issouf SOUMARÉ participated in the Workshop on Financial Inclusion and Risk Management for Agricultural Development as Convenors and Resource Persons at University of Ghana, 2-4 May 2018.

The workshop focused on two main objectives:

  • Training on Financial Inclusion and Agriculture Development

  • Training on Financial Risk Management

Njuguna Ndung’u appionted as the new AERC Executive Director

Congratulations to Prof. Njuguna Ndung’u for his appoinment as the new African Economic Research Consortium (AERC) Executive Director effective September 1, 2018.

Njuguna Ndung’u is a member of the International Advisory Group (IAG) of the ESRC Inclusive Finance Project under Centre for Global Finance.

Njuguna Ndung’u is the immediate former Governor of the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK), where he served for two 4-year terms as required by law, from 2007 to 2015. Prior to his appointment as the Governor of CBK, Njuguna Ndung’u was the Director of Training, African Economic Research Consortium, (AERC), 2003 - 2007.

Currently, he is a member of the Brookings Africa Growth Initiative (AGI) Distinguished Advisory Group; a Member of the Advisory Committee of the Alliance for Financial Inclusion (AFI) and was its Chair in its formative years in 2009-2012; and a Senior Advisor for the UNCDF-based Better Than Cash Alliance.

Over the years, Njuguna Ndung’u has held a variety of policy, academic, and advisory positions as indicated below:

Associate Professor of Economics, University of Nairobi, and faculty member of the School of Economics at the University of Nairobi, Kenya, since 1987. He has lectured in advanced economic theory and econometrics at the University and has published widely in international journals as well as chapters in various books on economic policy issues.

Member of the Committee of Ten (C10) comprising of five Finance Ministers and five Central Bank Governors representing the five regions of Africa to provide a platform for policy response to global financial crisis, led by the African Development Bank, Economic Commission for Africa and The African Union.

A member of Global Advisory Council (GAC) of the World Economic Forum

Visiting Fellow of Practice at the Blavatnik School of Government, Oxford University, 2015/2016.

Africa Regional Office of the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) of Canada, 2001-2003.

Robert Lensink awarded a Royal Decoration

Congratulations to Robert Lensink on receiving a Royal Decoration - Officer of the Order of Orange-Nassau for his work related to developing countries, in particular Africa.

Robert Lensink is CGF's research partner on the ESRC Inclusive Finance Project. He is Professor of Finance and Financial Markets at the Faculty of Economics and Business at the University of Groningen (80%) and Professor of Finance and Development in the Development Economics Group at Wageningen University and Research (20%). 

Issouf Soumaré participated as a plenary speaker at the 5th African Actuarial Congress

Our research partner of ESRC-DFID Inclusive Finance ProjectIssouf Soumaré (Université Laval, Canada) participated in the 5th African Actuarial Congress as a plenary speaker from 15 to 16 March 2018, delivering a talk on “Cross border banking and financial innovation in Africa: New trends and their implications for financial inclusion”.

He said: "I’m absolutely delighted to be among the plenary speakers at the 5th African Actuarial Congress organised by the Moroccan Association of Actuaries (AMA) and the International Actuarial Society (IAA) in Casablanca, Morocco, from 15 to 16 March 2018. Congratulations to my dear friends Mohamed Amrani, President of AMA, and its team for such a successful event, and Abdennasser Margoum, Director of Partnership and Development in Africa of ULaval, for a good representation and visibility of Université Laval (Canada)."
